My name is Claire Kaniewski and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. My private practice location is Long Beach, California, with close freeway accessibility.
My early work began in a school setting as a school-based therapist for a non-profit agency in Long Beach, CA for two years. There I worked with a diverse population for children and adolescents of all ethnicities. Much of my work included meeting the clients in their school setting, as well as providing family therapy for the client and their parents, either at the school or in their home. I worked extensively with the children/teens and their parents on a variety of issues:
Working with adolescents in the community has given me invaluable experience that I believe I carry with me in my private practice today. Providing adolescents with a space where they feel validated and heard is crucial to their development and success in life.
Prior to working with adolescents, I worked for The LGBT Center OC providing therapy for individual adults and couples. Much of the population I served at The Center identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning. We worked closely on issues such as:
*Identity and the coming out process
*Surviving childhood sexual abuse

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma (emdr.com).
FAQ's About EMDR
How did EMDR come about?
Francine Shapiro PhD was the founder of EMDR. She discovered that moving her eyes in certain directions reduced emotional tension. Francine did further investigation into this phenomenon making EMDR the subject of her doctoral thesis in 1987. Integrating her clinical experience, Francine has formulated a unique method which she calls EMDR. EMDR therapy has been practiced in clinical setting since 1989.
Who can benefit from EMDR?
Anyone who has ever experienced any upsetting event that they have not recovered from. Often people who have experienced an upsetting event have one or more of the following symptoms in varying degrees: feeling “stuck”, excess stress/tension, depression, anxiety, restlessness, sleep trouble, fatigue, appetite disturbances, and ongoing physical health concerns despite treatment. In the more severe cases: panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, obsessions, compulsions, and suicidal tendencies.
Since I began working with the LGBTQ population back in graduate school, I have always felt a pull on my heart to advocate in the community. My desire is to provide a space to support whatever obstacles you are dealing with or have dealt with in the past. I am truly honored to have an affirmative practice to serve any who identify with the community. Many of the issues we can address in session include:
-Identity formation and exploration (gender & sexual orientation)
-The coming out process (as this can be lifelong)
-Conflicts about gender, identity & sexuality (in individuals & couples)
-Relationship issues (with family or partner(s))
My most recent work within the community has been with transgendered youth and genderqueer/non-binary young adults (20-35). I do believe that trans and gender non conforming individuals should be able to advocate for their own need in the medical health care system, however that is not always the case. Therefore, I can provide letters for gender affirming surgeries.
I provide services for individuals and families (adults, young adults, and teens). Sessions are generally 50 minutes (optional 90 minute session for EMDR) in length and made by appointment only. Fee adjustment may be possible and will be determined at my discretion.
First-time clients should come to session approximately 10-15 minutes early to fill out paperwork.
For those inquiring about insurance coverage, I can provide a monthly superbill (invoice) for those with PPO insurance which you may submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
* I currently serve the areas of: Long Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Signal Hill, Belmont Shore, Naples, Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, Los Altos, Westminster, Lakewood, Carson, Bellflower, Fountain Valley, Newport Beach, Orange, Cypress, Cerritos, Garden Grove and Orange County.
